Hitting the high notes for Christmas

RockUs choir to help raise funds for MND Scotland

- Alison Rennie

A community choir will be in fine voice when they hold their community Christmas fundraising concert.

RockUs Community Choir is holding a Christmas concert to support Provost Lorraine Camero n ’ s f u n d ra i s i n g for Motor Neuron Disease Scotland.

The show takes place in Paisley Methodist Central Hall with Renfrew Burgh Band on Saturday, December 8.

And the choir’s musical director Gregg Muir promises it will be a great fun, family event.

He said: “The first half of the concert will be non- festive, a mixture of our normal pop and rock songs.

“After the interval, Renfrew Burgh Band will play a selection of festive tunes.

“Then we’ll come back and do some Christmas songs together.

“The night will be very family friendly.

“We want to get the audience involved as well.

“We did our first concert with the band last year which went well and had another one in June.

“We decided to see if we could keep it going.”

Although RockUs held a Christmas concert last year, this is the first time they’ve done a concert for charity.

They decided to approach Provost Cameron to see if they could support her fundraising for MND Scotland.

Gregg explained: “RockUs has been part of Paisley for about eight years now.

“I’ve been musical director for about two-and-a-half years, and Provost Cameron is a big supporter of ours.

“Rather than doing our regular charity concert, we thought we’d try and raise some money for charity as well.

“It’s something we hope to do every year and maybe pick a different charity each time.”

The choir has about 100 members who rehearse every Thursday in the Salvation Army Halls on Mill Street from 7pm till 9pm.

Gregg said Christmas is a busy time for the choir with appearances at lots of events and charity fundraising.

Provost Cameron thanked RockUs for organising the event and urged people to go along on the night.

She said: “I’m so grateful to them for considering me and the fundraising I’m doing.

“They approached me because they knew I’ve been fundraising for MND Scotland and they wanted to put on a Christmas concert.

“They thought it would be nice to do the concert for charity.

“It’s about raising money but also raising awareness so we’ll have some information for people to learn more about MND on the night.

“It’s a lovely thing they’re doing. I’ll be going along, it’ll be a great night.”

Tickets are priced £7 for adults, £5 concession and children and are available from ticketsource. co.uk/rockus-community-choir
