Scotland deserves better

-

I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing about the disaster that is Brexit – I know I’m getting very tired of all the broken promises and complete chaos that the UK’s decision to leave the EU has caused.

But more than that, I am disgusted by the Prime Minister and the UK Government’s total and continual disregard for Scotland, the will of the Scottish people, and the Scottish Government.

The UK Government has confirmed that its decision to impose Brexit against the will of the people of Scotland will make the country poorer under any outcome, compared with staying in the EU – yet has that encouraged the Prime Minister to take any steps to protect Scotland’s interests? Absolutely not. Instead, she continues to refuse to meet with the First Minister and then has the audacity to think that spending a measly three hours in Scotland trying to sell her doomed Brexit deal to sceptical voters will reassure us and keep us quiet.

Theresa May visited a leather manufacturer in Bridge of Weir last week, but the Prime Minister provided no new answers or any kind of clarity for our country.

While experts believe the UK will take a mammoth £139billion hit over Brexit – the £39billion divorce bill and the remaining £100million due to a fall in GDP – and despite these very concerning figures and the implications this will have on Scotland, the PM spent just 10 minutes answering questions from the Press and then made a hasty getaway. This is an utter disgrace and clearly demonstrates not only Downing Street’s disregard for Scotland, but also the very institution of a free Press. I can’t say that it shocked me. The UK government is now wilfully and shamefully pressing ahead with a policy it knows will hit living standards and the economy.

The Prime Minister and her government are determined to cover up the scale of the damage by modelling proposals it put forward in the summer that the EU has already rejected, instead of the blindfold Brexit they are actually proposing.

In fact, if the Prime Minister sticks to her self-defeating red lines, the only realistic outcome backs up the Scottish Government’s findings on the scale of the damage. For me, the Brexit shambles has only solidified one thing – the only way to protect jobs, living standards, social security, the NHS, and the simple will of the Scottish people is to make the important decisions for ourselves.

Scotland has shown she is more than capable; let’s not let a chaotic Tory Government destroy everything we’ve built and achieved over the years.
