You can help make sure Santa arrives for poorer kids

- Kenneth Speirs

The countdown is on for the Paisley Daily Express Christmas Toy Appeal.

As usual, we have teamed up with the Salvation Army, in Mill Street, to organise what is one of the biggest charity events of the year.

And it all moves up a gear next week, when the Salvation Army will start taking in the gifts generously donated by readers.

Gavin McInally, editor of the Paisley Daily Express, said: “It is a sad fact that there are many families in Paisley and Renfrewshire who simply cannot afford to buy toys and gifts for their children and teenagers at Christmas time.

“Happily, over the many years of our appeal, our big-hearted readers have stepped in without fail and donated items.

“This has helped make sure that Christmas morning is always a happy one for the young people of Paisley’s poor.

“I would like to thank our readers in advance for their continuing generosity.”

The Salvation Army Hall, in Mill Street (next to The Lagoon), will be open from Monday, December 10, to Thursday, December 13, from 10am to 4pm on each of those days to receive donations.

We ask that all toys are new and suitable for boys and girls ranging from newborn to 16 years old.

Please leave the gifts unwrapped as it makes it easier for the Salvation Army to allocate them.

We receive lots of toys for younger children, but ask that you might also consider a gift for an older young person, such as books, make- up and toiletries ( non- allergenic if possible), gloves, scarves, hats, hair accessories, jewellery, perfume, aftershave, keyrings and electronic games.

Please check if your gift needs batteries, so that your present can be used on Christmas morning.

We would kindly ask readers not to hand in toys or gifts to our office at the YMCA, in the High Street.
