Edwards: We’ve got to get a grip to get points

St Mirren’s struggles a ren’ t h a rd to pinpoint.

The fact that they are having a hard time against the sides around them while seemingly performing better against the bigger sides isn’t lost on some.

Saints midfielder Ryan Edwards admits it leaves the playing squad baffled – as they know they should be turning in the same level of performance week after week instead of saving it for the big guns.

Draws against Celtic and Hibernian were added to with a win over Hearts.

However, with Saturday’s defeat at the hands of Livingston seeing the side drop to the foot of the Premiership for the first time, Edwards insists the fans’ anger is also felt in the changing room.

He said: “It is very frustrating that we are picking up points against the sides that most probably wouldn’t expect us to considering the form that we are in.

“We are seeing all the points we picked up are against like Celtic, Hibs and Hearts.

“It is disappointing because these games are against teams that we are expected to lose.

“When we play against teams we should be beating to stay in the league, we are getting beaten, and losing heavily sometimes, and it is not good enough.

“We need to play better and find the consistency and form that we have against the so-called bigger teams.

“Why it is happening, I don’t know. But it really can’t continue and we need to find a way to snap out of it.”

Sunday’s draw between Dundee and Rangers saw Saints hit rock bottom.

However, Edwards reckons there is no point in moping as up to four sides scrap it out near the foot of the table.

He added: “We just need to focus on ourselves. We are trying to hold our own and pull the teams above us back in to the mix.

“The league is strange at the moment. If we had managed to beat Hamilton a couple of weeks ago we would have jumped them in the standings but they have beaten us and went further ahead.

“Dundee ended up beating Hamilton in the next game. That put the pressure on us and it is almost like a cycle going round, so we can’t worry about them and just get on with our own business of trying to stay in the league.”
