We can work

- ALISON RENNIE

A group of health and fitness students have swapped the classroom for the gym by taking their studies on the road.

The second year HND students, from West College Scotland in Paisley, are taking part in a 12- week graded unit working in the community.

Lecturer Linda Boal has teamed up each student with a client from Recovery Across Mental Health ( RAMH), which has its headquarters in Blackstoun Road, or the Scottish War Blinded day centre in Hawkhead.

She explained: “I tried this unit previously when I worked at a different college but most of the students used to say they would train their mum or their sister.

“It wasn’t a proper stranger like you would get in the real world.

“I told the students I would get them their clients and I’ll be able to see them working together.”

This is the second year Linda and her students have worked with Scottish War Blinded and the first year working with RAMH, which offers mental health support services.

Linda has assigned 10 students to work with service users at RAMH and another eight working with people from the Scottish War Blinded day centre.

The students have developed a 12-week personal training programme for each client.

They meet up with the RAMH clients on a weekly basis at Renfrew Leisure Centre to take
