Neilston aim to stay at the top of the tree

- JACOB TOLAND

Neilston Juniors travel to Victoria Park to take on Irvine Victoria today after last week’s game against Darvel was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Neilston are up against a side below them in the league and comanager Derek Carson says he hopes his side remain on top.

“We’re just ahead of them and it’s my intention for it to stay that way,” he said.

“I told the players at training during the week that they’ve to go and make sure they get a result.

“The whole team is confident with the way they’re playing.”

Despite last week’s game falling foul of the weather, Neilston were able to arrange a friendly during the week.

The Farmer’s Boys travelled to Erskine to play amateur side AFC Bridgewater on Tuesday night.

Carson’s side came out on top 8-1 in a game that will have provided some much-needed game time for the Neilston players, with many of their recent games being called off due to bad weather. Carson believes that the weekend off from football won’t change anything for his side due to the friendly: “There was no effect really. It was good we were able to squeeze in a friendly midweek.

“I was very pleased with the result. I actually think it could have been more if we’d taken our chances.

“The players never gave up and in the end, some of our strikers managed to score a couple of goals.

“It’s been a bit stop-start in the league recently due to the weather, so we’re looking to try and get a decent run of games now so the players can settle in.”

Carson also spoke of the departure of Paul Young who left by mutual consent during the week and said: “We wish Paul well, he got a new job recently at an apprenticeship and with the new work commitments, he felt he couldn’t perform at his usual standard.

“We had a chat with him were he felt it was best to move on.

“He still wants to play football though, so he’ll still manage to fit in some amateur games with his mates every now and then.”
