Comeback repeat was never on the cards

-

Oran Kearney revealed he warned his players a ‘ Roy of the Rovers’ performance wouldn’t do against Dundee United.

St Mirren earned the tie with the Terrors after a dramatic comeback performance against Alloa in the previous round, and came close to replicating a similar late show against United on Saturday.

Yet, with the strength of the opposition, the Saints boss felt in the build up to this latest Scottish Cup clash, falling behind to the Tangerines would likely leave the Buddies with too big a mountain to climb.

Kearney said: “I actually mentioned before the game that we couldn’t have another ‘Roy Of The Rovers’ day. We couldn’t go out and hit this game the way we hit the last game.

“Sadly for us that’s how it panned out, without the end product.

“In the last half hour of the game, when it’s all us, we possibly could have got something out the game, we could have got a replay or possibly something more out of it on chances created and everything else.

“But you can’t keep coming and expecting to a win a game in Roy Of The Rovers fashion.”
