Clark: We can learn a lesson from Meadow

- CRAIG RITCHIE

Colin Clark believes his Renfrew side can take inspiration from today’s opponents and catapult themselves up the table.

‘Frew travel to Ayrshire this afternoon to take on high-flying Irvine Meadow, bossed by former St Mirren man Brian McGinty.

The pair, who were both promoted to the Premiership last season, looked set to be locked in a relegation battle after they both got off to slow starts to the league campaign.

Renfrew seized the bragging rights early into the season as they thumped Medda 5-1 at New Western Park back in September.

But the heavy defeat appears to have been the wake-up call for McGinty’s men, who have since went on an astonishing run of form which has seen them lose just two out of their last 10 games, while drawing only one.

That has hauled Irvine Meadow away from any threat of relegation as they now sit in fourth. And Clark reckons it proves just how tight the league is.

He told Express Sport : “It’s been an unbelievable run, a magnificent run of form from them and they deserve to be commended for it.

“We obviously got the first win against them earlier in the season but since then they have been pretty much unstoppable. I don’t think anyone could really see it coming but credit where it’s due, they have been brilliant.

“It just shows to every other team what a little bit of consistency can do for your season. I don’t mean going out and winning seven or eight on the bounce, but if you are able to string a few results together then it can turn your year around.

“A few months ago Irvine Meadow looked stuck on to be scrapping near the bottom. Now I think they are safe.

“They could collapse between now and the end of the season but I still think they would probably be okay. They have done enough.”

Renfrew are likely to come up against their former striker Darren Jones, who left New Western Park for Meadow Park at the start of the season.

Clark revealed that he felt it was the best move for both parties, but is looking forward to locking horns with his former charge as his side heads through to Irvine.

He added: “It’s a great set- up down at Meadow and it is a nice play to go to and play your football. It will be good to see Darren as well because he was a good player for us and one that done really well.

“It had just reached a point were it was better to go separate ways. He wanted to play as an out and out striker and we couldn’t guarantee him that, we saw him more playing off the wing.”
