FREW ARE LIVING ON THE EDGE

- CRAIG RITCHIE

Renfrew remain teetering on the edge of the relegation zone following a humbling 3-0 defeat at the hands of Irvine Meadow.

Colin Clark and Martin Ferry’s side have now gone three games without a win as they battle against an instant return to the Championship.

A Callum Gow double was added to by a Ben Carson strike as Medda ran out deserved winners as they surged to second in the table.

However, the defeat leaves Frew with much to contemplate, with only goal difference keeping them out of the bottom three and above Kilbirnie Ladeside.

The hosts went close early on as Ben Sharpe beat the offside trap before firing over the bar from close range.

The respite didn’t last long however, with the chances continuing to rain in on Danny McLeay’s goal as Brian McGinty’s side looked for an opener.

Former Clydebank man Reece Pearson was the next one to try his luck but he also blazed over the bar instead of hitting the target.

Renfrew remained dangerous on the break and Scott Morton saw his effort blocked by Meadow keeper Shaun Newman after the Frew midfield pounced on some slack passing by Rhys Devlin.

The visitors found themselves 1-0 down when Gow headed home at the far post.

Carson quickly doubled the advantage before the interval, with the Irvine captain rattling home a spectacular volley into the top corner.

Renfrew came out looking to put up a fight but their luck was out when Gow again capitalised on some slack marking to head home.

Sharpe was sent off for his celebration in the aftermath but despite their hosts being down to 10 men, 3-0 was too big of a mountain to climb.

Former Renfrew striker Darren Jones was introduced for the hosts in the closing stages but instead of attacking, Meadow sat back and saw the game out.

Renfrew: McLeay, Wylie, Campbell, Healy, McGillion, Benton, Maxwell, Borris, McKenna, Morton, O’Keefe

Subs: Hardie, MacLennan, Trialist, Barbour, Burgess.

● An ambulance were required at Keanie Park as Johnstone Burgh’s clash with St Anthony’s was abandoned inside the opening minute.

A devasting knee injury for Ants goalkeeper Kenny McLachlan left him unable to move after landing awkwardly when collecting a John Ball cross.

The referee was ultimately left with no option but to abandon proceedings.

It is believed McLachlan will require reconstructive surgery to his knee cap, which was dislocated, as well as his cruciate.

Burgh boss Jamie McKim revealed he will be paying the shot-stopper a visit in hospital this week but was ultimately disappointed by the match official’s eagerness to abandon proceedings.

McKim told Express Sport : “The most important thing is the health and wellbeing of the Ants goalkeeper, and we wish him well. But I was annoyed how the referee just made up his mind instantly that the game was off.”
