Callum is still in the title race

- CRAIG RITCHIE

Callum Macaulay remains in the hunt for the Scottish Amateur Championship – 11 years after last taking the crown.

The Ralston Golf Club member has been in the thick of the action at Crail this week as golfers from across the country fight it out for the top title.

The 35- year- old heads up local interest in the competition as it reaches crunch time.

And he hopes to replicate the form that saw him use the Amateur Championship as a platform for a crack at the professional game.

Macaulay has now gone full circle since landing top spot in 2008, and is looking to seal another title after returning to the amateur ranks.

A solid start sees him remain among the frontrunners for the top prize after breezing beyond the halfway cut with a score of six under par.

His first round of five under par stood him in good stead as he soon followed it up with a one under par score of 71 yesterday.

Birdies on the third and fourth holes looked to kick-start another low scoring round, before a bogey on the ninth saw him close the first nine with a score of 36.

Undeterred, Macaulay bagged another couple of birdies to rocket him back up the standings. He look on course for an overall eight under par for the tournament before bogeys on the last two holes of the day brought his score back down.

However, the score was still enough for Macaulay to comfortably book his spot in the closing stages of the coveted competition,

The frontrunners, including Bruntsfield Links’ Eric McIntosh and Peebles Golf Club’s Darren Howie finished the day on 11 under par, to leave them five shots ahead of their Paisley rival.

Elsewhere, Caldwell Golf Club’s Alistair McNaugton also holds out hope of a high finish after also making the cut following scores of 65 and 71 to finish the first two rounds five under par. Fellow Renfrewshire golfers Matt Clark, Aidan O’Hagan and Craig Pirie also hold out hope of a high finish following solid showings over the first two rounds.
