One of the world’s most important anniversaries is to be marked with a competition centred on Paisley’s Barshaw Park.

The Friends of Barshaw Park are inviting people and groups to get creative for a chance to have a piece of their artwork displayed permanently in the park.

The winning design will take the form of laser cut steel panels to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day in 2020.

It will be on display in the park’s walled Peace Garden.

Victory in Europe Day marks the date when fighting in World War II came to an end in that part of the world.

Karen Sutherland, of Friends of Barshaw Park, said: “It will form part of a three- day weekend of commemorative events across the country.

“Following liaison between steel fabricators CLF Scotland and construction company Thomas Johnstone Ltd, Friends of Barshaw Park have been offered two laser cut steel panels to mark the occasion and would like the community to embrace the challenge of designing the VE Day 75 themed graphics for these panels.

“The two panels – each measuring 4ft by 1ft –can be as finely decorated as you wish and can also include text.

“Entrants may feel that their design dictates the orientation or combination of the panels and there are several ways the panels can be displayed to obtain the desired effect.”

The Friends of Barshaw Park is a group of enthusiasts who try to maintain the green space to a high standard and encourage people to visit.

The Peace Garden is one of its best-loved projects and is beautifully laid out with flowers, thanks to the constant work of volunteers.

It is intended as a quiet space where people can take time out to think or simply enjoy nature.

Design entries should be emailed to barshaw.friends@ gmail. com by Monday, September 30.

If people have any queries, they can use this email address or visit the Friends of Barshaw Park at the Walled Peace Garden on a Saturday between 10am and 1pm and ask for Karen or Irene.
