Now you can make Formakin your home
Wing of historic mansion goes on sale... for £500k
The east wing of a stunning A- listed mansion is up for sale.
The outstanding property is part of the historic Formakin House in Bishopton, and is a snip at offers over £549,000.
Formakin dates from the early 20th century but looks much older, having been based on the style of a 17th-century Scottish tower house.
It was the creation of John Augustus Holms, a stockbroker and art collector from Paisley, and his friend the architect Sir Robert Lorimer.
The current owners of the East wing are Susie and Kenny McKenzie, who will be sad to leave.
Mrs McKenzie, 50, said: “We are downsizing really and probably moving to the west end of Glasgow.
“Our children are grown up and independent of us now, so it is time to move.
“We have lived here since 1999 and moved in when it was a shell.
“Living here, you have all the benefits of country life but are close to Glasgow and the airport.
“We will sorely miss it.”
The mansion house is set in formal gardens of approximately six acres in size, and were greatly influenced by Gertrude Jekyll’s work at Munstead Wood in Surrey.
They include the Walled Garden, Fountain Garden, Oriental gardens and Orchard with the “lovers walk” themed love heart stone pathways.
The estate includes further park land including a site of special scientific interest, recreational woodland and pasture land.
Renfrewshire Council purchased the property in 1984 with funding from the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Formakin was operated as a visitor attraction for a time, and plans were made to redevelop the buildings and grounds.
However, this was not a success and the estate was finally bought in recent years by developer Kit Martin who set about converting the estate and buildings into a private residential estate.
The East Wing is a two storey attached main door property, and is a stunning example of an old property that also has all mod cons.
The upper floor has a galleried reception hallway with a sandstone fireplace leading to the master bedroom.
The garden is enclosed by mature yew hedging and a large lawn area with a split level terrace area, with spectacular views of the surrounding estate.
The sale of the east wing is being handled by Corum.
