FLOODGATES OPEN

- KENNETH SPEIRS

Paisley is set to be battered today by another possible downpour after a weekend that saw flooding caused by heavy rain.

There are fresh warnings on thunderstorms, with the Met Office issuing a yellow ‘be aware’ warning.

Foxbar’s Waverley Road and Amochrie Roads saw significant flooding at the weekend, and there was also flooding in Johnstone and Kilbarchan.

Frances MacDonald, who lives in Waverley Road, is fed up with flooding every time it rains heavily.

She said: “The road floods every time it rains heavily, but this is the worst I’ve seen in while.”

The Met Office said thunderstorms are expected to develop across much of Scotland by late tomorrow morning and through the afternoon, then slowly die out during the evening.

“Though some areas will miss these thundery showers, others could see 20mm within an hour and 30 to 40mm within three hours, as well as lightning and some hail,” it said.

The forecaster added that flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost, the Met Office said.

Sepa (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) has also issued a flood warning for west central Scotland for today.

It urged people to be vigilant and to take action to protect life and property.

Advice and information is available through Floodline on 0345 9881188.

Renfrewshire Council said yesterday that Waverley Road and Amochrie Road were now clear of flooding.

A spokesman said: “An officer checked today and have confirmed there is no flooding in Amochrie Road and Waverley Road. There are also no regular reports of flooding in the area.”
