- CRAIG RITCHIE

Paisley Pirates head coach Ian Turley is set for the international stage following his appointment as Great Britain U- 16s assistant coach.

Turley will be travelling to Latvia next April as the next generation of British stars take part in an international tournament in the country’s capital, Riga.

Turley was identified as a potential candidate for the role and after an extensive interview process in Manchester he was offered the post.

He will continue in the role of Pirates’ head coach, working in partnership with player/coach Adam Walker.

“It’s a fantastic honour to be asked to represent your country in any capacity so to be selected for a role within the GB set up feels like a great achievement and one which I will take with great pride,” Turley said.

“From my experience with the Scottish set up over the previous two years at U-17 level, I truly believe there is some great talent coming through in this country and I look forward to helping these kids improve their game at the highest level.”

The news has been greeted with pride by the Pirates hierarchy, with the club’s off ice operations manager Jackie Turley heralding the news.

She said: “Ian has been the Pirates’ head coach for nine seasons, moving into his 10th with the club.

“The appointment says an awful lot about what we’re trying to do as a club, in developing players to be all they can be, and to have that hard work recognised.

“At a time when we’re hopeful of forming a young development team as soon as circumstances permit, the timing couldn’t be better in illustrating that good young players are going to get every opportunity to improve and develop as a Paisley Pirate.

“This shows that we are dedicated to developing youngsters wanting to play ice hockey. It’s a huge boost to both Ian and everyone else connected with the Pirates, and it gives us all a lot to look forward to in the coming months.”

side of the ice for the Pirates this season.

Last year’s playoffs success is still ringing in his ears, and is looking forward to battling it out for more success.

He said: “Last year was a great experience not only for the team but also myself, Adam, and, indeed, everyone associated with the club.

“Winning the playoffs for the first time in the team’s history will always be special and the group of guys we had fully deserved their rewards.

“The team is coming together nicely and we look forward to building on that momentum from last year.” eCommerce platform on the Clan site.
