Perry’s Thai break
Martin Perry, pictured, is on the hunt for a Thai title ahead of today’s PTT Bangkok Open getting under way.
The British Para Table Tennis Team Performance ace, from Paisley, is part of a four-strong squad contesting the competition.
Commonwealth and European silver medallist Kim Daybell and fellow British Para Table Tennis Team Performance Squad athletes Jack HunterSpivey and Billy Shilton make up the team.
Daybell won gold in the men’s class 10 team event with the Czech Republic’s Ivan Karabec in the Japan Open last week, as well as bronze in the men’s class 10 singles.
Hunter-Spivey also took gold in Japan in the men’s class five team event and bronze in the men’s class five singles.
Perry secured silver in the men’s class six team with Frenchman Esteban Herrault and Shilton took silver in the men’s class eight team with Brit teammate Aaron McKibbin.
Perry and Herrault were 2-0 winners against the
Greek team of Georgios Mouchthis and Marios Chatzikryiakos and the Japanese team of Kazuki Shichino and Junki Itai. They played Germany for gold in their final match of the round-robin men’s class six event, but had to settle for silver after losing 2-1 to Thomas Rau and Tim Laue.
It followed a frustrating campaign in the singles competition, where Perry was unlucky not to progress from his group in men’s class six after losing to 17-year-old Marios Chatzikyriakos from Greece, 3-2 and Rau, the former World and European medallist from Germany, 3-1.
Although he beat the 25-year-old Herrault 3-2, Perry lost out on a place in the knockout stages on countback.
Also competing for Britain in Thailand will be four members of the Pathway Squad — Marc Bonnar, Jack Stockdale, Shae Thakker and Dylan Tynan.
