HEARTLESS-JOYRIDER STEALS AND CRASHES AMBULANCE

- DAVID CAMPBELL

A selfish yob nicked a life-saving ambulance from its Paisley depot and ploughed it into a bollard.

The mercy motor is off the road after the brazen thief smashed it into a post near the Craw Road base.

Police rushed to the scene after ambulance staff raised the alarm but were unable to

trace the lout.

The crook broke into the Scottish Ambulance Service site close to the Royal Alexandra Hospital at around 11.20pm on Friday.

He hopped behind the wheel and sped off towards a nearby cycle path and ploughed into a ditch.

It’s since been recovered and is due to undergo repairs to get it back on the road.

Equipment was also stolen from the vital motor during the incident.

The suspect is described as a tall, skinny, white male in his early 20s with short dark hair.

Officers probing the shocking theft believe the same man may have been trying car doors at the hospital carpark a short time before.

They received reports of man acting suspiciously ain the area at around 11.10pm.

Police last night branded the ambulance theft “despicable” and appealed for information to identify the culprit.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, from Paisley community policing team, said: “This type of crime beggars belief. It is bad enough stealing someone’s motor vehicle or property but to steal an ambulance used for the purposes of saving lives is despicable.

“Although the vehicle was recovered a short time later it had to be removed from service due to accident damage and theft from within. I would like to ask any person with information to contact Police Scotland on 101 or anonymously at Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting incident number 5448/10.”
