Gold at the double for Habbies Cameron and Kirsty

- CRAIG RITCHIE

Habbies stars shone even if the sun didn’t at the FPSG Age Groups in Grangemouth.

Cameron Wright and Kirsty Costello were the pick of the Kilbarchan AAC bunch as they each bagged a pair of gold medals in treacherous conditions.

Wright claimed victory first in the 2000m steeplechase and then took an exciting 1500m final in the worst of the weather.

Ellie O’Hara, of Edinburgh AC, had a double jumps success while Costello did likewise in the throws over two days.

Costello is no stranger to the podiums on these occasions and the Kilbarchan AAC athlete followed up her javelin success by winning the hammer.

Costello threw out to 55.14m, while the men’s hammer gold went to Annan and District athlete Danny Gracie at 50.37m.

Wright showed his form earlier this summer for Scotland in Wales at the U-20 International and then with a fine 1500m run at the GAA Miler Meet.

But the Kilbarchan AAC athlete held off the challenge of Magnus Tait at Grangemouth to win the 2000m steeplechase in 6.01.21 by a second’s margin. The U-20 Women’s 1500m steeplechase was won by Esme Callander, of Team East Lothian, in 5.42.91.

Elsewhere, sprint golds at 100m went to different ends of the country. Giffnock North’s Alyson Bell justified her tag as favourite by taking the U-20 title in 12.22 while Angus Ian Turley’s appointment as the GB Under-16 assistant coach has been greeted with open arms.

As reported by Express Sport last week, the Paisley Pirates head coach has joined the international set up to new U-16 chief Mike Clancy.

And head of the GB Programme Board, David Hand said:“We are excited about Mike, Ian and Andy joining the Under-16 staff.

“I am sure they will make a good coaching team and they are perfect to help develop the next generation of young talent.

“I would like to thank Steven Lynch and Natalie Aldridge for their work with the Under-16s and, of course, Simon Leach who has moved up to the Under-18s. Davren, of Inverness Harriers, won a very tight finish in the men’s in a time of 11.35.

Ellie O’Hara won the triple jump with 12.30m and the Edinburgh AC athlete added the long jump title with a leap of 5.82m.

Andrew McFarlane, of Shettleston, took the pole vault title with a clearance of 4.40pm – after winning the javelin the previous day. In the shot, there was a win for Tia Henry, of Pitreavie AAC, with a distance of 10.84m. VP-Glasgow thrower Alice Baxendale won the discus title with 35.38m.

PAISLEY PIRATES

“They did a fantastic job and on behalf of Ice Hockey UK, I wish them well in the future.”

Turley will combine the assistant coach role with his position as head coach of Paisley Pirates in the SNL.

“I’m delighted to be joining the programme and feel I’ve been given a great opportunity to develop the country’s brightest prospects,”said Turley.

“To be able to represent your country in any capacity is fantastic, so to be selected for a role within the GB set-up feels like a good achievement and one which I will embrace and take with great pride.”
