Kyle: It feels like I’m back where I belong

- CRAIG RITCHIE

Kyle McAllister says the prospect of being reunited with Jim Goodwin ensured “coming home” to St Mirren was his only option.

The Scotland U-21 international sealed a sensational permanent switch back to Paisley last week after leaving Derby County following two and a half years.

McAllister signed a three- year deal on Friday before being handed another debut, his third for the club, as Saints saw off Aberdeen on Sunday.

Goodwin was the club’s skipper when McAllister cut his way through the ranks as a 17- year- old. And he revealed that the opportunity of playing under a man that knows him best was pivotal in him deciding that a third spell at St Mirren was the right call.

He said; “It feels really good to be back - especially coming back with a win. Jim wanting me was the main thing that brought me back, although I enjoyed my time on loan as well.

“When I first started playing for St Mirren Jim was the captain. I used to train with him a lot. So I knew him well before signing. That was a big part in my decision to come back. As soon as he phoned me I was interested.

“He knew what I was like in training back when I was younger and knows what I’m all about. Him showing that he wanted me – knowing what type of player I am – made me want to come back. It feels like I’m coming home.”

McAllister has been tipped for the big time ever since breaking onto the scene while St Mirren were in the Championship.

A successful spell on loan last season again showcased his qualities, so much so that other clubs had come calling for his services.

He added: “Of all the teams that came in for me, St Mirren was the one that I thought I would do best at so I decided to come back.

“I had a few other options. Derby at first weren’t going to let me leave on a permanent deal. They just wanted to loan me out. But when they decided I could go permanently St Mirren were keen to take me on and I’m happy to be here.

“It’s a three-year deal so there’s a commitment there from both sides.

“Since Jim came in as manager he’s be on at me trying to get me to sign. I had discussions with my agent about what to do and we felt this was the best move. I enjoyed every minute of it last year and I’m raring to be back.”
