Your song is music to my ears, Jon tells the fans

- CRAIG RITCHIE

St Mirren striker Jon Obika still has his song ringing in his ears – and he doesn’t want the choruses to stop.

The Englishman is already a hit with the Saints support after agreeing a twoyear deal with the Buddies earlier this month.

The Saints support has already penned a catchy tune for the frontman, replacing Tequila with Obika from The Champs classic.

The tune has proven a hit with fans and players alike, with it still being whistled around the training ground this week.

Obika says he will consider the backing as a badge of honour as he strives to give supporters even more to sing about.

He said: “It’s been stuck in my head, it’s been stuck in my family’s heads – yeah it’s been stuck in everyone’s head.

“It was just an amazing atmosphere throughout the game.

“The song was lovely to hear though, I loved it.

“Everyone is humming it around the training ground. It is quite hard to get out your head.

“I honestly appreciate that backing from the fans.

“They were singing throughout the 90 minutes and really gave us the energy to keep going. They kept going and that really gave us a lift heading into the closing stages.”

Saturday’s victory over Aberdeen put the first points on the board for the Buddies this season.

And Obika has warned that standards can’t be allowed to drop, adding: “Aberdeen were a tough test – just as the gaffer and his management team said they would be. But we were very strict in our shape and we didn’t have to come out of it too much.

“I feel like the boys are gelling and getting fitter every day and I think you are going to see the performances get better as the weeks go on.

“It is up to us to continue the way we are playing.

“We have set the benchmark now and we need ensure that standards don’t drop.”

After missing the majority of last season out through injury, the frontman is just relishing being back out on the pitch.

He said: “I’ve had a stop-start pre-season and I’ve had to fast track to get going in order to be ready for the games. It was just a release to get back out on the field. I was buzzing to be out after such a long injury. Being injured makes you appreciate what you have and I feel like I am getting into it.”
