Kash hopes his training with Buddies will pay off

Paisley-based boxing champion Kash Farooq will be in the ring this weekend to defend his title.

The 23-year-old will bid to defend his British bantamweight title when he comes up against Duane Winters at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu on Sunday night.

Farooq, who carries out his strength and conditioning training with Pro-Life’s Alex Whelan, is aiming to extend his unbeaten record.

His record stands at 12-0 with five stoppages, most recently most recently stopping Kyle Williams in April.

Speaking about his trainer, Farooq previously told the Express: “I’ve always had the talent. I’ve always had the skill, the fitness, but Alex has taken me to the next level strength and conditioning wise. He’s given me a diet plan and stuff that I didn’t really have a clue about.”

This weekend’s match will be Farooq’s third title defence with the bout taking place in Glasgow.

Kash will win the coveted Lonsdale belt outright if he overcomes his Bristol rival on August 17, in a fight that will be shown live on the BBC Scotland channel as well as being streamed on the BBC Sport website.

Farooq became the first Pakistan-born boxer to become British champion when he blitzed Jamie Wilson in 73 seconds last year.

Bristol-based Winters, 31, has won 11 of his 12 professional bouts and is Britain’s Southern Area super bantamweight champion.

Farooq and Winters are due to meet at 22:15 BST, with BBC Scotland’s online coverage also featuring each undercard fight at the city’s Radison Blu venue.
