STAYING POWER
Everyone’s got a part to play, insists Goodwin
Jim Goodwin insists there is no need for anybody to leave despite the club’s summer signing spree.
St Mirren have pushed the boat out to land a host of new signings for their second consecutive season in the top flight.
Ilkay Durmus, Sam Foley, Calum Waters and Kyle McAllister have all joined the Paisley side since the campaign kicked off.
Goodwin says he is delighted with the current squad – and won’t be actively trying to push anyone out the door.
He said: “Will players have to move on? Not necessarily. We’ve got a very strong squad now. Looking at the bench last weekend we had real options in attack and defensively.
“We’re well covered and the competition for places is massive. I don’t necessarily want to be losing anyone as I want to keep that competitive edge in training.
“I want the guys in the team to maintain those standards. That’s what good teams do. They churn out good performances consistently.
“We tried to be as positive as we could after the Betfred games and the last two performances have given the place a real lift.
“It’s great for everyone – the players, my staff, and the guys behind the scenes like Tony, Gus and the chairman who have all worked hard to make this happen. And we’re delighted to have been able to give the fans something to cheer about on a pretty wet day on Sunday.”
Goodwin had to play a waiting game in the summer as he attempted to add new bodies to the side.
He revealed he feels vindicated, having been impressed by the standard of the new players.
He added: “I said a few weeks ago we could have signed a lot of players early on but patience was the key. We had to get them right. We’re not at a club where you have the luxury of making mistakes. Every player that comes in needs to hit the ground running.
“There’s no bedding in period this late in the window. But you can see that every one of the new signings has added a real bit of quality.”
The gaffer revealed there is scope to bring new players in.
He said: “We won’t stop looking.
“The majority of the good ones have gone at this point. It just depends on whether, a few games into the season, some players maybe don’t see themselves as being a part of whatever club they’re at.
“If we get a shout on one or two of them we’re in a position where we can move.
“The board have been great. They’ve backed me to the hilt in terms of getting the players we wanted to bring in.”
