Unemployme­nt in Renfrewshi­re is on the decline

Westminste­r says almost 1,600 more people are in work than they were five years ago.

Ministers say the number claiming employment-related benefits have been slashed by more than a quarter.

Amber Rudd, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Minister for Women and Equalities, has vowed to help more into work.

She said: “More people in work than ever before means more households across the UK are earning a regular income.

“Our workforce increasing­ly reflects our vibrant society, with a record number of women in employment while the number out of work falls to an all-time low.

“This month many young people have received their exam results and begin their career journey.

“They should know that they are entering a workforce that is flourishin­g and full of opportunit­y.

“I hope all young people, especially women, feel empowered to flourish in every role in every sector.”

The Department for Work and Pensions figures reveal 4,026 adults in the area claim employment-related benefits.

The count is down 226 from last year.

Youth unemployme­nt has increased slightly.

Jobcentre bosses reported 34 more people aged 18 to 24 collecting handouts.

An annual increase of five per cent.

Staff have been helping those seeking work with access to funding schemes.

Grants are available to disabled people looking to get into roles.

Cash can be spent on visual, hearing and movement aids, as well as travel costs, up to £59,200 annually.

Across Scotland, unemployme­nt is down a quarter from five years ago.

More than 114,000 people are now receiving employment­related benefits.

Justin Tomlinson, Minister for Disabled People, insisted help will be giving to everybody seeking roles.

He said: “Having a disability or health condition must not be a barrier to enjoying a fulfilling career.

“The support available means there’s no excuse for employers who refuse to be inclusive.

“The Access to Work scheme removes the obstacles facing disabled people in workplaces across Scotland, helping to level the playing field and ensure businesses don’t see employing disabled people as a burden.

“With a record number of disabled people in Scotland supported through it, local employers are benefittin­g from the skills disabled people bring to the workplace.”
