Oscar legend is in town

Glenda Jackson films new BBC drama in Paisley

-

Two-time Oscar winner Glenda Jackson was spotted on the streets of Paisley yesterday.

The 83-year-old is in town filming Elizabeth Is Missing, the BBC One feature-length adaptation of the bestselling novel.

It marks the famous actress’s return to the screen after a break of over 25 years in the lead role of Maud.

When her best friend Elizabeth goes missing, Maud is convinced that something terrible has happened, and sets out to solve the mystery.

But with her dementia worsening, unfinished business unearthed and the past and present starting to merge, Maud’s search takes on a poignant urgency.

Paisley is standing in for several locations in the novel both in the present day and the 1940s.

Filming has already taken place in the town’s High Street, New Street and Kilnside Road and is due to finish this week.

Glenda said:“Emma’s novel and Andrea’s screenplay paint the most striking portrait of a woman in the grip of a devastating condition. I am delighted to be making my return to television to play Maud, a character it’s impossible not to be charmed and moved by.”

Also starring in the film are Helen Behan from The Virtues and This Is England, Sophie Rundle of Gentleman Jack and Peaky Blinders and Maggie Steed of EastEnders and Paddington 2. Paisley’s own Tom Urie is also part of the cast.

Elizabeth Is Missing will be directed by Bafta awardwinning Aisling Walsh and produced by STV productions.

It is set to be broadcast next year.
