Best foot forward for annual Wallace Day celebrations

- KENNETH SPEIRS

William Wallace will be remembered in his home town with a colourful gathering today.

The historical figure, seen by many as a Scottish hero, was born in Elderslie and educated at Paisley Abbey before going on to play a decisive part in the country’s history.

The day will start with a parade leaving from Johnstone’s Ludovic Square for a 2pm muster, and leaving for the Wallace monument, in Elderslie, at 2.30pm.

At the monument there will be a solemn wreath-laying, followed by speeches by MSP Tom Arthur, and Patrick Herman, a member from Liechtenstein, who belongs to the Society of William Wallace.

On a lighter note there will be music and lots of stalls.

Gary Stewart, convener of the Society of William Wallace, emphasised that the event was strictly non-political.

“We want it to be a real family event for Elderslie and for the whole community to come out and enjoy themselves,” he said.

“Everyone is welcome to come along, and we’d be happy to see three or four hundred people here.

“We’re hoping for good weather too.”

At the gathering people will be able to browse lots of stalls that will include information about the life of William Wallace, join the society and pick up the odd item of Scottish interest.

“There will also be weapons on show similar to the ones from William Wallace’s time,” Gary Stewart said.

Sir William Wallace was born in 1270 and is regarded by many as one of Scotland’s greatest national heroes.

He was leader of the Scottish resistance forces during the first years of struggle to free Scotland from English rule.

In August, 1305, he was arrested near Glasgow and taken to London, condemned as a traitor to the king and was hung, drawn and quartered.

Wallace’s name became more familiar to a worldwide audience through the hit movie Braveheart.
