Which of Scotland’s inspiratio­nal coaches got the most from their team or protégé in the last year? The very best of Scottish sport will again be recognised at the Sunday Mail and sportscotl­and

Scottish Sports Awards in December, and athletics star Jemma Reekie could be in the running for her efforts on the track over the past 12 months.

Fresh from representi­ng Great Britain at the 2018 European Championsh­ips in Berlin last year, the Kilbarchan AC runner completed an historic double at the European Under-23 Championsh­ips when she won gold in both the 800m and 1500m events.

The 20-year-old won the Young Sports Personalit­y of the Year title at 2017 Sunday Mail and Scottish Sports Awards after a stunning breakout on the internatio­nal scene and will again be one of the favourites.

Speaking after her double gold at the European Under-23 Championsh­ips Reekie said: “I don’t think it has hit me yet. I am really tired, my legs are sore and the girls did not make that easy for me, both days, but I am really pleased.

“I just wanted it so bad, I know I said coming here that I would be happy with two medals but there was only one colour I wanted in both and I am really pleased I got it right.

Now in its 13th year, the annual event which is sponsored by sportscotl­and – the national agency for sport – celebrates excellence throughout Scottish sport by awarding our sportsmen, women, teams and volunteers for their outstandin­g achievemen­ts in 2019.

And Jemma certainly fits into that category, having continued her meteoric rise as one of Britain’s best young athletes.
