Ferguslie captain Henry targets title next season

- ANDY MCNAIR

Ferguslie Cricket Club finished off their season with a fine away win at Prestwick.

The result means the Meikleriggs outfit have finished fourth in the 2019 WDCU Premier League.

Uddingston claimed the title thanks in part to Ferguslie’s gutsy win on Saturday at the Henry Thow Oval.

The convincing 42- run victory at Prestwick came after a terrific first innings total of 255 for seven after they won the toss and chose to bat.

Top scorers for the visitors were Taimoor Ahmed with 64 and N Mpofu with a fine 50.

Skipper Riyaad Henry just missed out on his 50 – bowled out agonisingly close on 47.

In reply, Prestwick were all out in 46.4 overs for 213. Har Tahir was Ferguslie’s best with ball in hand finishing with terrific figures of 3 for 23, Mpofu also grabbed 3 wickets for 53 runs.

Captain Henry said: “We needed to finish the season on a high.

“All the boys played really well and it was a great team effort.

“It’s a tough place to go and play cricket. They still had a chance to win the league but we were determined it wasn’t going to be against us that they won it.”

After a title- winning campaign last year, Henry admits 2019 has been a difficult time.

He added: “We didn’t put whole performances together enough this year. I’m not disappointed that we finished fourth but more that we didn’t always believe as a team we could win the league again.

“But if you look back at the games we lost, 99 per cent of them we were in winning positions.

“I think we still have the talent at the club to win the league next season.”

Meanwhile, Paisley played host to cricket’s Scottish Cup final at Meikleriggs at the weekend.

Sunday’s match was bathed in scorching sunshine and a large crowd enjoyed the experience.

A Ferguslie spokesman said: “A great day at the field of dreams – well attended and great weather. Great organisation by all and Heriot’s lifting the trophy.”

The match s aw Edinburgh’s Carlton end on 142/7 in their 50 overs with their capital rivals Heriot’s going on to win in the 47th over by four wickets.
