NEVER SAY NEVER

Goodwin delighted with squad but may add before transfer window deadline

- ANDY MCNAIR

Jim Goodwin hasn’t ruled out adding to his St Mirren squad before the transfer window slams shut.

Despite being happy with the players he has at his disposal – including last week’s signing Junior Morias – the manager admits he wouldn’t overlook any deal that would strengthen the Paisley side’s ranks.

“We’ve got a few days of the window left,” Goodwin said.

“At the top end of the pitch I’m quite happy with what I’ve got. In central midfield we’re pretty well covered there. But I never say never.

“The board have been brilliant with me up until now. If a player has come along that I felt would improve us, they’ve backed me which is great. “We’ll not stop looking.” Goodwin continued: “As always you’re inundated with agents firing you through players but I would only bring one in if I felt the player would really benefit the squad.

“If the window closed this afternoon I’d be delighted with the squad that I’ve got.”

The Buddies brought in Morias on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee last week with the Jamaican froward making his debut off the bench against Rangers on Sunday.

It was a game that saw Saints run the Glasgow giants close with a stunning Borno Barisic free kick proving decisive in the end.

Goodwin has had a chance to reflect on the match and is still more than happy with his team’s showing.

“Those kind of games are difficult because, as much as they’re great for the players and are live on telly with a great atmosphere, I find them very frustrating as you don’t have enough of the ball as you would like,” he said.

“It can be a bit more frustrating for the supporters as well as they want to see you on the front foot. But against teams like Rangers you just can’t do that.

“I watched Hibs try that and Rangers put six past them. I watched Midtjylland try it in the Europa League and they put four past them. So, we had to give Rangers all the respect they were due by being set up to be hard to beat.

“There were passages of play that were good and we had opportunities to score a goals.”

It’s that kind of application Goodwin hopes his side will take into Saturday’s clash atLivingston.

“We can take a lot of things forward from the last three games like our organisation, structure and will to win. I’d expect us to be a bit more offensive and attack-minded,” Goodwin added.
