Paisley out to make sure rivals fall by the Wayside in opener

Anchor side face Drumpellier in first clash of the season

Paisley RFC start their league campaign on Saturday and are hoping it gets “off to a bang”.

Fresh off their thumping 47-0 win over Bishopton in the Renfrewshire Cup , coach Simon Brown’s side welcome newly promoted Waysiders Drumpellier to the Anchor Recreation Grounds.

The club has a full day of rugby action planned with the second XV playing Clydebank RFC in a pre-season friendly from 1pm, followed by the top team match against the men from Coatbridge at 3pm.

A Paisley RFC spokesperson said: “We invite all our supporters down to help us get the new season off to a bang. See you all on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, the Anchor club, who ply their trade in Scottish Rugby’s West Regional Division Two, have paraded new back row forward Kieran MacNicol.

The 35- year- old from Stirlingshire previously played at Hyndland for Glasgow Accies.

He made his debut in the win against Bishopton and was by all accounts unlucky not to get on the scoreboard.

Coach Simon Brown said: “It’s great to have Kieran at Paisley.

“I’ve known him for a number of years and he will add to some great options we have in the back row.

“Kieran is an aggressive ball carrier and good in the contact area and that is something that we will need in abundance this season.”

MacNicol joins recent new recruits back row Lee Haughey, 35, and centre George Wood, 29 at the Anchor this season. Haughey is also the club’s new vice-captain.
