MP Gavin: Check you’re registered to vote
Politician Gavin Newlands is calling on his constituents to ensure they are registered to vote.
With a snap General Election looming, the Paisley and Renfrewshire North MP says it is almost certain that Renfrewshire will be going to the polls soon.
The constituency saw the highest increase in registered voters across the UK last year, with more than 70,000 voters across the constituency at the end of 2018.
But analysis by the independent Electoral Commission shows only 86 per cent of eligible voters registering to vote across Scotland, meaning as many as 20,000 residents across both Renfrewshire seats could miss out on their right to vote.
At particular risk of losing their vote are under-35s with 74 per cent on the electoral register, and only 70 per cent of private tenants on the roll.
SNP man Mr Newlands has highlighted the numbers and asked for everyone to make sure they’re able to exercise their franchise.
He said:“The British Government is disintegrating before our eyes, meaning an election is almost inevitable.
“I know everyone will want to express their views at the ballot box on the mess we are in – but you need to be registered to vote first.
“I urge everyone across Renfrewshire to check whether they’re on the electoral roll, and if not to get themselves registered as soon as possible.
“With our country’s future in the balance, I really want to see young people get on the register – over a quarter face being denied their say at the election.
“No matter what your views or how you vote, it’s crucial that we all have our say on the future of our country and who you want representing you at Westminster.
“A UK General Election could be only weeks away – don’t miss out on your chance to have your say.”
