Jailed thug faces being deported after serving time for Paisley attack

- RON MOORE

A yob caged for attacking a man in Paisley faces being booted out of the country.

John Jeffrey, 33, punched Christopher Delacruz to the ground, where he continued to kick him on the body during the beating.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Jeffrey is likely to be deported to his native South Africa after serving jail time for the assault on Mr Delacruz.

Jeffrey, formerly of Brediland Road, Foxbar, but recently living at an address in Kilmarnock, had pleaded guilty to last year’s attack.

He appeared from custody after he admitted breaching a Community Payback Order handed to him as an alternative to prison for the assault.

It emerged Jeffrey is awaiting trial on another case and recently appeared at court for a more serious matter.

Defence agent Cha r l i e McCusker urged the court to take the “pragmatic approach,” and hand him a sentence for the assault rap.

He said: “The case has a bit of history.

“He was handed a Community Payback Order after admitting the assau l t, but he has subsequently breached the order.

“He has been further detained for other matters.

“He is in custody for a petition matter and his awaiting a trial for a summary matter.

“However, he is keen to have matters resolved today.

“He recognises that he will be deported at the end of these matters.”

The lawyer said Jeffrey was admitting his breach of the order.

Jeffrey pleaded guilty to attacking Mr Delacruz at Greenlaw Drive in the town’s east side by punching him on the head, causing him to fall to the ground, where he repeatedly kicked Mr Delacruz on the body to his injury on July 16 last year.

Sheriff James Spy agreed with the defence agent and locked Jeffrey up in.

He said: “I wi l l revoke the Community Payback Order and you will be sentenced to four months in prison.”
