Another fine show from Trinity kids

- CARLA TALBOT

A group of star Renfrew pupils wowed an audience in Glasgow’s oldest music hall — and their performance helped raise vital funds to restore the historical building.

More than 40 children from Trinity High School took to the stage at The Britannia Panopticon to perform their hit school show, The Greatest Showcase.

And their efforts in the music hall led to £700 being raised for much-needed restorations to the old building.

Staff were over the moon with the kindhearted contribution from the pupils which will help improve the hall for future shows.

The building first opened in 1857 and became one of the first places Stan Laurel, of the famous Laurel and Hardy duo, performed.

The link to the famous comedy pairing was fitting for the pupils as their show featured acts based on the men.

Their stint at the famous theatre comes after three sold-out shows at their school, which led to the theatre becoming interested.

And almost all 40 of the hardworking pupils were delighted to get back up on the stage.

Teacher Catriona Dougan, who organised the show alongside fellow teachers Alanna McNalley and Nikki Calderwood, said: “In the first week of the summer holidays, one of the former pupils phoned to ask me if we could do the show again at The Britannia Panopticon as she was enthusing about the show and her part in it so much that they asked if we could possibly recreate it for them.

“The Laurel and Hardy link made it seem like fate.

“Almost all of the cast agreed to be involved, even though it meant swapping or missing work shifts, rehearsing on a Sunday and giving up Friday nights and a whole Saturday to perform two matinees.

“The staff at the hall were blown away by our performances and the professionalism and dedication of our pupils as well as their energy and talent.

“They see it as a new lease of life for a place that needs a great deal of care and attention but many people don’t know about it.”

The youngsters had already performed sell out shows at their school back in June, having been rehearsing since December last year.

The budding stage stars performed the show which featured songs from hit musicals over the years.

Catriona says she was stunned at the response to the show.

She added: “Nikki and the pupils worked tirelessly every Friday after school for months to learn the routine.

“To this we added many more numbers, including Guys and Dolls, Oliver, Matilda and Laurel and Hardy.

“We received nightly standing ovations and we had to disappoint a lot of people as we simply couldn’t meet demand for tickets.

“It was fantastic.”
