Sculpting paper is a way of life for Pam

- KENNETH SPEIRS

An artist has explored a new technique with paper to make amazing pictures.

Pam Scott is one of the top exhibitors at the current Paisley Art Institute Annual Exhibition.

And she is thrilled to be among such distinguished names.

Pam said: “What I do is basically sculpt paper.

“It makes a kind of threedimensional effect.

“In the Paisley show there is a portrait of Billy Connolly and it’s called Where’s Glasgow? It’s a kind of Where’s Wally thing.

“In among his hair is the Glasgow Coat of Arms.

“I know it sounds a bit mad. I’ve changed the bird and the fish and all of that into where he lives now in Florida, so the bird is a flamingo and the tree is a palm tree and the fish is bath.

“The other one is called the giraffe and it’s among palm trees and cactus, and one of the little leaves is made of paper with a Paisley Pattern, which is quite nice, I think, for this.”

Pam, 58, whose family comes from Paisley, takes infinite care over her works of art.

“They take two weeks to a month,” she said.

“I curl it round things like rolling pins and wooden spoons, cut it with scalpels and scissors, I burn it, I crease it, crinkle it, tear it, whatever it takes.”

Amazingly, Pam taught herself this beautiful art at her kitchen table.

“My background is illustrating for children’s magazines and greetings cards,” she said.

“What I have been doing for quite a long time is a wedding business – wedding invitations and all the wedding stationery.

“So, I’ve really been working with paper for decades and it has just kind of developed into this, which is very exciting for me.

“This is the first time I have exhibited at PAI or anywhere.”

Pam, who is married to Andy, 59, and is mum to Molly, 30, and Danny, 28, was thrilled when she heard she had been accepted for the prestigious show.

“I think I jumped up and ran around the kitchen,” she said.

“It was absolutely amazing. I hope it’s a good start.”

The Paisley Art Institute Annual Show is at The Piazza until October 20.

Admission is free.
