VICTIM, 67, LEFT IN HOSPITAL AFTER SENSELESS BEATING STREET GANG DRAGS OAP FROM BIKE

Twisted youths attack pensioner

- DAVID CAMPBELL

A gang of feral young thugs dragged a pensioner from his bike and battered him in a sickening late night attack.

The 67-year-old cyclist suffered a fractured eye socket during the brutal beating as he pedalled through Paisley town centre.

Police revealed the victim, who is a Portuguese national, was cycling along County Place at around 11pm when he was targeted by the violent group of youths.

Six or seven brutes surrounded

the pensioner before pulling him from his push bike and laying into him.

He was repeatedly punched in the face during the senseless attack on Tuesday.

After he scrambled to his feet in a bid to escape the youths, the violent gang made off with his bike.

The injured OAP was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital’s A& E, where it was discovered he had a broken orbital bone, which is the eye socket.

The attack is being treated as a serious assault and Paisley cops last night appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police were called to reports a 67-year-old man was seriously assaulted in Paisley’s County Place on Tuesday night.

“This was a despicable and completely unprovoked attack on a man simply going about his business.

“He sustained facial injuries and was treated in hospital.

“Our enquiries into the serious assault are ongoing.”

It’s understood the same mob also tried to break into cars in the town’s Oakshaw East a short time after the attack.

The roof of a brown Vauxhall Mokka was damaged after a yob jumped on the vehicle.

Police said an 18 year- old man has been arrested in connection with assault charges in relation to an attack and a report sent to the procurator fiscal.

She added: “If you saw or heard anyone acting suspiciously in the area, then we would like to hear from you.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
