Police hunt for runaway axe attacker

- DAVID CAMPBELL

Police have launched a manhunt for a runaway thug who was jailed over a “brutal and senseless” axe attack.

Joseph Gilogley was caged for eight years in 2015 after he admitted violently assaulting a car wash worker with the weapon.

Cops are now hunting Gilogley, who has strong connections to Renfrewshire, after he breached the terms of his licence following his release from open prison HMP Castle Huntly in January.

Officers have been trying to trace him since he was last seen in July, following a police operation at a property in Kilbarchan.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Extensive enquiries have been carried out in areas he is known to visit and officers think he may be in the Glasgow area.

“He is white, around 6ft 2ins tall, with a slim, muscular build and short black hair.

“Officers from Renfrew police station are appealing for anyone who may have seen Joseph or has any information or knowledge as to his whereabouts to contact them via 101.

“Anyone wishing to provide information anonymously can do so through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

It’s understood cops don’t believe he poses a risk to the public.

of a assaulting Ryszard Nowakowski at a car wash in Fife.

The court heard at the time that Gilogley had sunk a large inheritance into the business. However, his partner fled with the cash.

Raging Gilogley stormed up to the premises on September 29, 2014 and demanded his investment back.

Innocent worker Mr Nowakowski was punched and struck with an axe during a vicious assault, with Gilogley telling him: “You will be getting this every day until you leave here.”

Mr Nowakowski was badly hurt as a result, sustaining injuries to his head, arm and eye.

Judge Norman Ritchie QC jailed Gilogley after he pled guilty to assault and acting in a threatening manner.

He told him: “How you went about trying to recover the money was by the way of a gangster. That is absolutely unacceptable in a civilised society.”
