It’s official — the west of Scotland’s best steak pie is made right here in Paisley.

Gleddoch Family Butchers, in Glasgow Road, has been given the regional title in the Scottish Craft Butchers Award in 2019.

The company lifted a gold award for their tasty pastry in the biennial competition two years ago.

Now they’ve gone one better and secured the regional championship in the face of stiff competition.

Production worker Kri s McKelvey said: “Our steak pie is a great favourite. It’s a traditional recipe our pie- maker Robert Graham brought with him when he joined the company several years ago so we don’t know his secret – just that it works.”

Kris said the butchers is sure the regional title will boost sales of the popular pie.

He added: “Word soon gets around that you have something special for sale — something recognised by your peers and the industry — and sales just take off.

“A traditional steak pie is standard New Year fare but it’s also a weekend favourite for our many loyal customers.”

Gleddoch Family Butchers also lifted a gold award for their steak pie with links and a silver award for their mince round.

Other local butchers lifting awards in the Scottish Craft Butchers Awards 2019 include Elderslie Butchers who won gold awards for both their mince round and their steak with chanterelle mushroom, red wine and bone marrow gravy pie; John Marshall & Son in Johnstone won gold awards for both their mince round and their traditional steak pie and a silver award for their steak and sausage pie, and McDowall Butchers in Paisley won silver awards for both their traditional steak pie and their mince round.

Gordon King, executive manager of Scottish Craft Butchers, confirmed Gleddoch’s traditional steak pie as “outstanding”.

He said: “We had nearly 100 traditional steak pies entered in the biennial awards from all across Scotland.

“That’s a lot of pies for the judges to taste but there was definitely something special about Gleddoch’s that marked it out for the 2019/20 West of Scotland regional title — that indefinable ‘something’ that makes it one of the best in Scotland.”

He added: “These awards show the exceptional standard of product being crafted by our local butchers and set the bar pretty high for others to follow.

“This year’s evaluation attracted a high number of entrants and competition for the top titles was very fierce.”
