Your vote is your say on your future

-

Another fortnight has passed since my last column but we are still no closer to knowing where we are heading with Brexit or when we will be facing a General Election.

It is anyone’s guess what will happen next in Westminster. Following last week’s decision by the Court of Session, this week the Supreme Court will make a decision on whether the Prime Minister acted lawfully in suspending Parliament for five weeks.

The UK Government needs to get back to work. It is a disgrace that the Tories have shut down Parliament to avoid scrutiny and at the same time, limiting the time to address other matters.

Poverty, pensions and welfare, these are all still very real problems however they are not being treated as a priority while all other issues are brushed under the carpet in an attempt to force a No Deal Brexit through.

We now know that the UK government has not yet made a single alternative proposal in discussions on Brexit and will delay any offer of an extension.

It is a complete embarrassment and more proof that Boris and his team, are happy for us to be ripped out of the EU with a No Deal, so happy, that they are not even attempting to think of any solutions or alternatives and are making no effort to hide that.

Amidst this chaos, I am thankful that the Scottish Government continue to lead the way in Scotland with bold policies and investment in key areas.

In contrast to UK Government austerity and welfare cuts, the Scottish Government continue to think of new ways to improve people’s lives, while also mitigating the worst effects of cuts from Westminster.

I recently brought you some of the ambitious and positive steps that the Scottish Government will be taking in our Programme for Government.

Every day we are proving that unlike Westminster, we have the capability of running the country and doing what is best for our people while at the same time, standing up for Scotland in the middle of this Brexit crisis.

While the SNP is doing everything we can to move Scotland forward, the threat to our economy and our society is real.

As long as a no deal Brexit remains a risk, we will do everything we can to ensure that we are prepared but we have to be honest that we cannot prevent all the damage it will cause.

That is why the upcoming election is of great importance, we need to send a clear message - Scotland did not vote to leave the EU and we continue to stand firm against efforts to take us out of the EU against our will.

The SNP will be Scotland’s opposition to Brexit and our right to choose our own future as an independent nation will remain at the heart of that.

With the inevitable announcement of a General Election any day, it is very important that you make sure you are registered to vote.

If you are not registered, make sure that you take steps to register now. It only takes a few minutes to complete the online form or alternatively you can register by post.

Do not miss out on having your say in what could be one of the most defining General Election’s in recent years.
