Matthew is beaten but unbowed
Renfrewshire Golf Union’s Matthew Clark’s Home International heroics weren’t enough to help Scotland defeat the Auld Enemy.
Held at Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland, between last Wednesday and Friday, Scotland took on England, Ireland and Wales as they attempted to land the title for the first time since 2012.
Kilmacolm golfer Clark, who was playing his eighth consecutive Home International competition, helped Scotland to an 8.5-6.5 win over Ireland on day one.
The Scots then toppled Wales 9.55.5 the following day.
Despite winning 4.5 out of a possible six points overall, Clark was unable to help Scotland beat England in the final match on Friday.
The two countries were tied after the morning foursomes, with Scotland holding the upper hand at one point in the deciding singles session.
Ultimately England ran out 9-6 winners, but the fact eight of the ten matches went beyond the 16th hole proved that Scotland ran them mighty close.
Posting on social media, Clark said: “England deservedly won a second consecutive Home Internationals with possibly the strongest team I’ve ever seen.
“For Scottish golf it’s another step forwards. Beating Ireland in Ireland is an achievement in itself. To run England so close is another step on our developmental path.
“I was honoured to share the fairways with so many stars of the future and present.
“Many will turn professional in the coming weeks and I and others will watch with great anticipation.
“Good luck and play as we all know you can.
“Wearing the captain’s armband of my country in competition is truly a humbling and treasured experience.”
Clark also revealed he is already looking forward to leading Scotland once again, especially on home soil.
The Home Internationals next year will take place at Royal Dornoch in Sutherland.
He added: “The 2020 contest feels a long way off, but we’ve done eight so why not try for nine – and it’s in Scotland?
“It’s at Royal Dornoch, I’m captaining again and I will have control of the golf course. It’s time for a Scottish win once more.
“Thanks to everyone for all their support.
“Myself and the team felt it.”
