Police hunt gang after man is battered in unprovoked assault

- DAVID CAMPBELL

A gang of youths battered and bottled a man in a “completely unprovoked” attack in Renfrew.

The 47- year- old victim was heading home from a night out in the early hours of yesterday morning when he was jumped by three yobs.

He was at the corner of Renfield Street and Wilson Street at around 12.35am when he was targeted by the thugs.

The trio repeatedly punched and kicked the victim before smacking him with a glass bottle.

He suffered cuts and bruises during the mindless onslaught and was treated at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

One of the attackers had a scarf or bandana over his face, detectives probing the incident say.

It’s understood the thugs made off in the direction of nearby Fulbar Lane after the attack.

Detective inspector Bob Bowie from Paisley CID appealed for information over the “unprovoked” attack.

He said: “This was a nasty and completely unprovoked attack on an innocent man simply walking home from a night out.

“He was approached by three males who then began punching and kicking him.

“He was struck with a glass bottle and suffered lacerations to his face and was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley for treatment.”

He added: “We are appealing to anyone who may have seen three males acting suspiciously near to Renfield Street and Wilson Street at around this time.

“We believe the suspects made off in the direction of Fulbar Lane, so again, if you saw anyone acting suspiciously or running away, then we would like to hear from you.

“I’d also like to ask anyone in the area with CCTV to check if they captured anything that may be useful to our enquiries.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
