SHOOT ON SIGHT

Calum: We must start testing goalkeepers

- BEN RAMAGE

Left-back Calum Waters is desperate to help his new Buddies hit the back of the net.

The Kilmarnock loanee, who has started five of St Mirren’s six Premiership games so far this season, was swinging in crosses all day as the Saints struggled to break through Hamilton’s dogged defence.

The home side once again fired a blank, with just three goals notched in the league so far this season.

And now the 23-year-old wants to help the Saints strikers break their ducks with a few more assists to get the team pushing up the league table.

“It definitely feels like a couple of points missed,” he said after the goalless clash on Saturday.

“It’s frustrating because we had the majority of the ball but should have worked their goalie more.

“We had loads of shots but not enough on target. We’re not working opposition goalkeepers enough.

“I want to try and help the strikers out. The crosses were coming in from both sides. It wasn’t for a lack of trying.

“But we need to get that finishing touch that we’re just lacking at the moment.

“It’s one of those ones that even if one goes in off the shin that’s what sets them off.

“That could get them a wee bit more confident, coming in with their chest puffed out and then banging in a few goals.”

Waters, who spent time on loan at Sligo Rovers last season, is enjoying getting so much game time at the Simple Digital Arena.

And he’s desperate to repay the fans for supporting him as he settles into life in Paisley.

He said: “It’s been great so far for me personally. The gaffer has been brilliant and the fans have been great with me.

“I’m just trying to get as much game time and get my confidence up.

“I want to get my fitness levels up every week so I can keep getting better and better.”

Waters has already switched his attention to Saturday, when St Mirren take on Hearts who will arrive fresh from their Edinburgh derby win over rivals Hibs.

The defender is glad that the Buddies go into the clash on the back of a clean sheet.

He added: “We’ll be working all week for the Hearts game on Saturday. We need to build on that defensive display.

“We were solid at the back which is important, especially losing a couple of goals in the last couple of games.

“But we’ve got to create more chances and start getting more goals.”
