It’s high five as GlenifferThistle march on inWest of Scotland Cup

- AMATEUR FOOTBALL

Gleniffer Thistle travelled to Ayrshire for the first round of this season’s West of Scotland Amateur Cup to face Crosshill Thistle from the Ayrshire AFA.

It was to be a worthwhile journey with the visitors recording a convincing win.

The game was less than a minute old when Gleniffer striker Conor Higgins scrambled the ball home following good work down the right from wing back Iain Robb.

The lead was doubled in the 18th minute by Conor Ramsay from the penalty spot. A swift Gleniffer attack led to Ramsay being fouled in the box, and the attacking midfielder slotted away the resulting spot kick into the top corner.

The Jags then virtually settled the tie on the half-hour mark when Barry McKellar placed the ball into the corner of the net. Ramsay got on the end of what seemed like an overhit pass but managed to keep the attack alive and pulled the ball back for McKellar to finish.

Adam Stevenson extended the lead with a rocket from the edge of the box following a Gleniffer corner kick. Crosshill failed to clear the danger and Stevenson pounced, a well-taken finish back across goal and into the top corner of the net.

The second half started poorly for the Jags with Crosshill scoring within two minutes of the restart. A corner was whipped in and a glancing header sent the ball into the roof of the net.

However, the tie was settled by McKellar just after the hour mark when he latched on to a brilliant through ball from Ciaran Crawford. The Thistle striker took the ball in his stride before dinking it over the goalkeeper from 25 yards.
