FOOTBALL DREAMS COME TRUE THANKS TO HOSPICE

A AP Paisley man scored one of t the best goals of his life, thanks tha to a new scheme set up by Accord Hospice.

The T staff at the charity’s day therapy the unit launched Wednesday Wishes Wis – and this lets patients to fulfil fulfi a particular desire in life.

And A for John McCarthy, 64, that tha meant a visit to the Scottish Football Fo Museum at Hampden.

John J was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Ne Disease in May 2018 and quickly qu realised he would need help he and support.

He said: “When I came to th the hospice the first time I was re relatively fit, I didn’t know what Iw I was doing here.

“But now, it’s something I can’t do without.”

Rangers and Liverpool are John’s favoured teams.

He had always wanted to see memorabili­a associated with one of his all-time heroes – Bill Shankly.

A Wednesday Wish was promptly organised and off John went with Accord staff to the top venue.

The Scottish Football Museum staff were amazing with the VIP visitor and couldn’t have supported him and Accord more on the trip, John revealed.

“I had a brilliant time, especially watching the footage of Old Firm game,” he said.

John enjoys his visits to Accord and talking to the nurses, patients and volunteers.

Due to his condition, the only time he gets out of the house is when the Accord drivers come to pick him up and take him to day therapy.

“Without the hospice, I don’t think I would still be alive,” he said.

“If there were more people in the world like the nurses at the hospice, the world would be a much better place.”

Wednesday Wishes can be in the form of a simple activity or a day out to a place of interest.

Accord says many people with a life- limiting condition can feel isolated, vulnerable and trapped within their own homes.

The charity’s aim with the new scheme is to support and enable patients to accomplish the wish of their choice.
