Thug hit his girlfriend in face with a can of cider

- RON MOORE

A brute sprayed alcohol over his girlfriend and then smashed her in the face with a can of cider.

Maurice Brady, 28, trailed Lauren Orr through the streets of Paisley following an incident at a house party in the town.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Brady caught up with her near Gilmour Street railway station and attacked her, leaving her drenched in booze and humiliated.

Procurator Fiscal Depute Ruth Cockburn told the court : “The complainer was at an address with the accused’s sister and some other people.

“At around 5.30am the complainer left the premises due to the fact the accused’s sister was extremely under the influence of alcohol.

“She left the flat and made her way to Paisley town centre.

“The accused had also left the flat and followed her to the town centre.”

The court heard two police officers on patrol were contacted by CCTV operators because Brady was swigging from a can of cider in the street.

When cops traced him, they saw him confronting Ms Orr and carrying out the assault.

Ms Cockburn added: “When police approached the accused, he was engaged in some sort of conversation or argument with the complainer.

“Po l i c e w i t n e s s e s observed the accused swing the can at the complainer, clubbing her on the face and chest area with the can four times.

“He also struck the complainer in the face with the can of cider.”

Brady, of Thrushcraig Crescent in Pa i s l e y , pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting his ex-partner Ms Orr on May 18 by repeatedly throwing a quantity of liquid on her head and body and striking her on the head with a drinks can, and pursuing her.

Defence agent Paul Lynch said Brady, who had accepted his guilt from the outset, had just been released from a previous sentence when he carried out the attack.

He explained that there had been “animosity” between the accused’s sister and the complainer at the house party which prompted Brady into pursuing her.

Mr Lynch said: “He was under the influence and that is no excuse.”

Sheriff Linsdey Kooner told Brady: “Clearly, what you did to our ex-partner was extremely unpleasant and this must have been a very difficult experience for her.

“However, you have pleaded guilty and you did not want to put Ms Orr through further distress.”

She handed him a year’s supervision by the local authority and ordered him to perform 130 hours of unpaid work for the benefit of the community.
