New move to improve safety at busy junction
LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER
A number of proactive measures have been taken in a bid to make a busy junction in Bridge of Weir safe for pedestrians.
Raised islands, reflective bollards and rumble strips have been introduced at the Prieston/ Kilbarchan/ Bridge of Weir Road junction in the village in an effort to slow cars down at the trouble spot.
The improvements wi l l complement other recent safety measures on the road, which saw this entrance to Bridge of Weir added to a 30mph zone.
Community groups and churchgoers had raised concerns over crossing the road with cars travelling at the national speed limit, leading to the completion of a traffic regulation order.
This saw Councillor Natalie Don, who represents the village, hold a site visit with council officers and local people who had expressed concerns about pedestrian safety.
She explained: “Anything that improves safety for pedestrians at this busy junction is welcome.
“I originally arranged a site visit for this area back in November 2018 after a local resident raised their concerns with Derek Mackay MSP and I at one of our street surgeries.
“I invited the local tenants and residents’ association and the community council along to the site visit with council officers as I was aware of the concerns that each group had.
“Officers proposed a range of options and following discussion with both groups, certain measures were agreed.”
Councillor Don shared her joy at the completion of works and said she hopes it will make a significant different to the speed of cars in the area.
She added: “I am glad that these works have now been carried out and I have already received some great feedback about the works from local residents.
“Coupled with the newlyextended 30mph zone which now extends just past St. Mary’s Church in Bridge of Weir, I hope this will make a big difference in terms of the speed of cars in the area and ultimately, pedestrian safety.”
