School is top of the class when it comes to looking after Ryan
A Paisley school has been recognised for its top health care.
St John Ogilvie Primary has been given a Good Diabetes Care in School Award for its work in helping manage the condition for nineyear-old pupil Ryan McGuiness.
The school was nominated by his mum Jenny.
She said: “As a parent of a child with Type 1 diabetes, I am delighted that the school has been awarded the Good Diabetes Care in School award.
“This award is not given unless the school can show evidence that they deliver effective diabetes care and management.”
Jenny said trusting someone else to manage a very complex medical condition is hard.
She said: “There has never been a time where I have felt concerned about the care my son receives.
“The school have always ensured that he isn’t excluded from any activities and will always communicate with myself if they have any concerns or questions.
“This recognition for the school is important as without staff being trained, following care plans and understanding that no two days are the same for someone with Type 1 diabetes, my son’s care at school would be very different.
“Sadly, I have heard of other parents where they have had to remove their child from school due to the lack of care and we are so lucky that we have a school that supports my child.”
The mum praised teachers and office staff for all they do.
“There are many people in the school who are some way involved with the care and management of my son’s Type 1 diabetes,” she said.
“A great team effort by a great school.”
This prestigious award is open to both primary and secondary schools.
It is the only honour that Diabetes UK offers and is aimed to be a fantastic way to demonstrate the great care provided to children with diabetes in school.
It celebrates the schools that work with parents and healthcare professionals to ensure children with diabetes have as easy an experience at school as possible.
Whether you’re a parent, care, member of school staff of healthcare professional, you can nominate a school.

Headmistress Lorna Murray added: “As a school community we are delighted to receive this award.
“The children, staff, parents and carers work closely together to raise awareness of diabetes and ensure the best possible support is in place to meet the needs of our children.
“We are really pleased that the hard work and dedication of all involved in the care of our children has been recognised and celebrated in this way.”
