We don’t need Brexit chaos
On Saturday the House of Commons sat for the first time in over 40 years in what the media coined Super Saturday.
The reason for this sitting was so that MPs could vote on the dodgy deal that Boris Johnson got from his negotiations with the EU.
Ridiculously, the deal that Boris wants MPs to settle on is a deal that is actually worse than his predecessor Theresa May’s was.
Yet again this joke of a prime minister was defeated and instantly started throwing his toys out of the pram.
Boris is now permitted by law to ask for an extension as part of the Benn Act however, the PM could not even bring himself to sign this letter and also sent a cover letter setting out why he does not believe delay would be in the interests of the EU or UK.
The Tories are going to give England and Wales what they voted for in Brexit. They’re ready to give Northern Ireland a special deal.
So, what about us here in Scotland? We are about to be dragged out of the EU against our will with the forecast saying we will lose jobs, our public services will suffer and so will our economy.
Shockingly, the Tory Government has admitted it has carried out no economic analysis of this proposed deal. The prime minister is essentially asking MPs to sign a blank cheque so he can impose his devastating Tory Brexit on all of us, which would leave Scotland and Renfrewshire much poorer and worse off.
Since 2016, SNP MPs have continuously urged the UK Government to take into consideration the impact that this Brexit fiasco will have on all of our constituents.
At every turn the Tories have chosen to reject us, ignore us and disrespect us. They deny Scotland the right to choose its own future as the ignorance and arrogance continues.
I have received thousands of emails and letters from constituents over the last three and a half years urging me to vote against Brexit.
I will not vote for a deal that will cause Renfrewshire to be worse off economically. According to figures from the UK Trade Policy Observatory, an estimated 1,100 people in Paisley and Renfrewshire South could lose their jobs as a result of the economic shock of a no-deal Brexit.
This is what Boris Johnson wants for the people of Renfrewshire – a billionaires Brexit that does nothing to calm the austerity, rising living costs, pension cuts and stagnated wages that the Tories are burdening us with.
How a supporter of the Union can look at what has happened in UK politics since 2014 and say, honestly, that we couldn’t at least give it a better go than the way we are being governed in London right now is completely beyond me.
The UK Government’s position on independence is unworkable and disrespectful to my constituents who are being dragged through this Brexit chaos while being hammered by a decade of Tory austerity.
The diversion and disparities between our Scottish Government and the UK establishment is astounding.
It becomes clearer and clearer everyday why Scotland should have the right to choose if we want to be part of Brexit Britain with Boris or if we want self-governance as an independent Scotland.
