Boozy yob ends up in court after mayhem in two Paisley pubs

- RON MOORE

A tanked- up yob sparked mayhem at two Paisley pubs after being warned about his drinking.

Groundsman Michael Rennie, 33, kicked off at Jaybee’s in the town’s Maxwelton Street and at the Copper Coin in George Street.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Rennie took umbrage after he was chinned by bar workers about being under the influence when he smashed a window, shouted and bawled abuse, broke a tumbler and threw a pool cue across the bar.

Procurator Fiscal Depute Joanne Gilmour said: “Numerous members of the public were within the Copper Coin public house.

“A witnesses was also working within the Copper Coin.

“Around 7pm on the date libelled, a witness was also working within Jaybee’s public house, Maxwelton Street.

“At around 7.50pm a witness became aware of the accused at Jaybee’s public house. There was concern regarding his alcohol abuse.

“Due to concerns made to the witness, the accused was confronted about his drinking.

“He went out the door onto Maxwellton Street, where he threw his mobile phone to the ground and tried to stamp on it.

“He was repeatedly shouting and swearing. He also threw a glass causing it to smash, then walked to the Copper Coin.”

The court heard the witness followed Rennie to the nearby pub where he went behind the bar and snatched up a pool cue.

The fiscal added: “He lifted the pool cue.

“He was asked to leave. He walked towards the door at which time he threw the pool cue.

“He walked away and punched a pane of glass adjacent to the door of the public house causing it to smash.”

Rennie of Beith, North Ayrshire, pleaded guilty to charges of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm in that he shouted, swore and behaved aggressively on June 22 and to breaking a window.

A defence agent said alcohol lay at the root of her client’s behaviour and that he would benefit from supervision.

She added: “Clearly, had it not been for alcohol, he would not be in this forum.”

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew deferred sentence on Monday to obtain more information prior to handing him his punishment.

Rennie will discover his fate on November 6.
