Tributes as gentle giant John dies on USA holiday

- CARLA TALBOT

A respected SNP activist has died suddenly while on a dream holiday in America.

John Clark, who was well known across in Renfrewshire due to his role as office manager for Derek Mackay MSP passed away on Sunday.

The 34- year- old, who has been described as a “gentle giant”, was in Denver, Colorado, when he died.

He had posted on social media just days before heading to the United States on the dream holiday.

The post on Twitter read: “Two weeks off work! Next stop Denver, followed by Albuquerque, LA and then Ensenada.

“Not much happening just now, so seems perfect time to get away.”

Tributes have since poured in for John, who was renowned for his jovial character and generous spirit.

John’s heartbroken sister, Michelle Clark, said their family have been left “numb” by the news.

She said: “It is with the deepest regret that my family have to share the sad news that this weekend we have lost our brother, son, grandson, uncle and great friend to many, John Clark.

“The unexpectedness of this has left us all numb.

“John touched the lives of so many and was a loving brother.

“Our family are understandably devastated and appreciate your support and understanding at this sad time.”

John, who grew up in Kirklandneuk, Renfrew, and lived in Paisley, was well known in the community for his work with Mr Mackay.

The former taxi driver also ran as an SNP candidate in the Paisley Northeast and Ralston ward in the Renfrewshire Council election in May 2017.

Mr Mackay expressed his sadness at the loss of John, who was tipped to have a very bright future in Scottish politics.

He said: “I am so sorry to that my friend and colleague John Clark has passed away. This tragic loss is devastating to his family, friends and the cause he served with such commitment.

“John, a gentle giant of a man, is irreplaceable.

“The most trustworthy, loyal and hardworking person I have ever had the privilege to call my friend.

“A rock to many, not least myself. “One of life’s good guys. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten.”

In July, the Express reported how kind-hearted John and a couple of his friends raised more than £1,900 for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) by walking 42 miles of the charity’s a 62-mile Glasgow to Edinburgh trek, which he endured with a sore back and dislocated shoulder.

Arrangements for John’s funeral service will be announced in due course.
