Neilston march on in the cup

-

Neilston safely booked their passage through to the fourth round of the Scottish Junior Cup with a comfortable win on the road at Brechin Victoria.

Despite missing their two star strikers Dylan Fletcher and Mark Deacon, the visitors took a lead into the break after a Brechin defender put the ball into his own net under pressure from a Martin Curren cross.

Curren doubled their lead in the second half with a good close-range finish to seal a place in the last 32.

Co- manager Chri s Cameron was pleased to seal progression against a “stuffy” side.

He said: “It wasn’t pretty by any stretch of the imagination but the main thing was getting through.

“We said before the game that it wasn’t about the performance so much but getting the job done and we managed that.

“It wasn’t free- flowing because they were a very stuffy side.

“They had a big guy holding up top and they went very direct to him.

“Steff Stirling also missed a penalty when their keeper made a great save so it was comfortable at least.”

The only negative for the Farmer’s Boys was when Stirling saw red after the referee adjudged him to have taken a tumble when clean through on goal.

Cameron said: “Anyone who knows Steff knows he’s not one to ever go down too easy.

“It’s one of the poorest refereeing performances I’ve seen for a while to be honest.

“It’s sometimes that way when teams from the west head over to the east. The 50-50 decisions tend to go in the home side’s favour.

“But I’m really pleased to get into the next round and we’re hoping for a good draw at home this time around.”
