If we’re not up for the fight..we’ll be down and out

Foley’s warning to squad after Killie setback

- BEN RAMAGE

St Mirren midfielder Sam Foley says the Buddies only have themselves to blame after losing all three points against Kilmarnock.

The visitors had numerous chances to take the lead at Rugby Park on Saturday, but once again left their shooting boots at home with no one able to find the net.

Foley then lost his man Gary Dicker in the box for the crucial goal that left St Mirren still looking for their first point on the road this Premiership campaign.

“That kind of game is always going to be a battle,” Foley told Express Sport.

“You’ve got to take that mentality into the game and if you’re not up for the fight you’re going to get exposed.

“I don’t think that was the case against Kilmarnock. I think it was just the finer details that it came down to in the end.

“On reflection I don’t think either team did enough to say they deserved all three points.

“A draw probably would have been a fair result but it’s not happened again and we’ve only got ourselves to blame.”

St Mirren have only managed five goals in ten league games this season, with trouble scoring continuing to be the club’s main concern.

Foley, who joined from

Northampton Town in the summer, knows it won’t be any easier to find the net tomorrow night when the Saints take on Celtic in Glasgow’s east end.

While the 33- yearold is looking forward to taking on the Hoops, a good performance is more important to him than soaking up the atmosphere at Parkhead.

He said: “It’s important we don’t dwell on the result. We need to move on. It’s good we’ve got another game quickly so we can focus on that. I’m looking forward to it. The performance will be more important than the occasion for me.

“It ’ s something new and something I’ve never experienced before but come Wednesday there’ll only be one thing on my mind and that’s being involved in a good team performance.

“It’s nice to have these big games but for me it’s just an added bonus of coming up here.

“When I spoke to the gaffer my mind was made up that St Mirren was the place for me, regardless of what else came with it.

“It was the football club that sold it for me.”

Foley also paid tribute to the 1,038 travelling fans who made their to Rugby Park on Saturday.

He added: “The fans have been brilliant. In the first game against Hibs I was taken aback by the support.

“They’ve continue to follow us to away games in serious numbers. We’re always thankful for their support and it really does help a lot.”
