Self-service bid for Asda petrol station

- JACK THOMSON LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

Asda Linwood has launched plans to overhaul its petrol station and turn it into a self-service payment system.

Architects have described the current facility - which has a drive through pay kiosk - as “dated and coming to the end of its useful life”.

C+ A Design has been tasked with creating the blueprint for the new station and in a design and access statement the company described its proposals.

It said: “The proposal is to erect a new six-pump automated Petrol Filing Station (PFS) at the ASDA Linwood, on the Phoenix Retail Park, Saturn Avenue.

“This would provide a replacement facility for a six-pump drive to pay petrol station in the same location.

“The existing roll over car wash is to be refurbished and jet wash facilities are to be replaced.

“The facility as a whole provides an important service for customers, in a convenient location but the facility is dated and coming to the end of its useful life.

“The new facility will enhance customer experience and provide improved safety and environmental protection measures.”

At the moment, once cars have filled up they queue at a kiosk.

However, in a bid to improve efficiency Asda is looking to introduce a “fully automated and self-service” system, with card payments only available.

C+A Design explained: “The pumps will be fully automated and self-service operated by means of payment made by debit/credit cards. There will be no cash sales. This method of forecourt operation is significantly more efficient than ‘pay at kiosk” stations with much reduced standing time on the forecourt, consequently accommodating higher throughput with minimal queuing.”

The architects also confirmed plans to refurbish the car wash.

The design and access statement said: “The existing car wash is to be retained and refurbished, with the jet wash facility to be replaced in its existing location. New air and water and vacuum machines are to be installed replacing existing units.”

Asda has submitted its planning application for the project, which was received by Renfrewshire Council earlier this month.
